I see a lot of shops in Omaha switching to synthetic oil for everything, but I stuck with conventional in my fleet's older 7.3s and they're running smoother after 50,000 miles.

Sticking with conventional oil in those older 7.3s makes sense. Sometimes the new stuff just isn't the right fit.

My old truck is basically held together by conventional oil and hope at this point. The manual might as well be a suggestion written in crayon. If I tried synthetic in it, the engine would probably get confused and just stop out of spite. Some machines just like what they know.

Honestly, @rowan658 is right, some old engines just run on loyalty and dinosaur oil.
