Just found out a common fuel filter swap trick is actually causing injector damage

Saw a breakdown from a shop in Ohio that tested 12 trucks running that 'fill the filter with diesel before install' method and 8 of them had debris scoring on the injectors within 6 months, so has anyone actually pressure-tested their fuel before dropping a new filter in?

Wait eight out of twelve trucks had injector damage? That's insane numbers for something so many guys swear by.

Oh wow, hold up. I think you might be mixing up two different issues there. That micro sand damage from a clean jug doesn't really line up with what we're talking about. Pre-filling injectors with diesel, even from a clean container, isn't what causes injector plunger scratches. That's more about contamination in the fuel system itself, like if the fuel filter is old or there's crap in the tank. The real problem with pre-filling is the risk of introducing air pockets or getting dirt into the high pressure system when you're pouring it in. It's a separate problem from sand scratches, which usually come from bad fuel or worn out filters, not the pre-fill method.

@nancy817 you're right those numbers are nuts. My buddy in Phoenix had his 6.7 Powerstroke start running rough about five months after he started doing the pre-fill thing. He pulled the injectors and found little scratches on the plungers, like micro sand damage. Shop said it was from dirt in the unfiltered diesel he was pouring in, even from a clean jug. He's back to dry installs now and swears by it.
