Old timer told me I was torquing head bolts wrong on my 6.0 Powerstroke

I've been doing these for like 4 years, always went by the torque spec in the manual. This guy in his 70s watches me for a minute, says I'm not doing the three pass sequence right. Said I was rushing the middle pass. He showed me how he does it, slower and more even. Next one I did, had zero issues with the heads. Anyone else get schooled by some old hand on something basic?

Old timers usually earned their knowledge the hard way, by breaking things and fixing them. I think the three pass method on a 6.0 is one of those things that sounds simple on paper but takes a feel you only get after years of doing it. The torque to yield bolts are especially tricky, and rushing through the middle pass can let the block pull uneven. I've seen guys crack a block or lift a head gasket just from not letting the bolt and the threads settle during that middle step. It's humbling, but I'd rather learn from their mistakes than make all of them myself.

Did you notice any difference in how the bolts felt going in during that middle pass when he slowed it down? Like did it change the resistance or the way they seated?

@wendyg43 I get the respect angle but that old timer's method isn't the only way that works.
