Old timer told me to stop using ether on cold starts, he was right

I've been spraying starting fluid into a 6.0 Powerstroke every morning for two winters now, and this retired fleet mechanic at the parts counter in Tacoma said I was killing the glow plugs. He told me to just cycle the key three times and wait, so I tried it on a 14 degree morning last week and it fired right up, no drama. Anyone else have a hard time trusting the slow way over the fast fix, or is it just me that's been fighting my own stubbornness?
