Spent 8 hours chasing a phantom knock on a 6.7 Powerstroke

It was just a loose heat shield on the turbo downpipe, but the sound traveled so weird it had me pulling injectors. I mean, you can't trust your ears sometimes, right? Anyone else had a simple fix hide behind a ton of wasted time?

Can't trust your ears" is exactly it. I spent a whole weekend sure my old truck had a rod knock. Turned out to be a loose alternator bracket slapping the block. The simplest stuff makes the worst noise.
