The $80 coolant filter I skipped cost me a $2,400 head gasket job in Reno
I used to think bypass filters were just extra plumbing for fleets, but after a 2018 International 4300 ate its own cooling system due to silicate drop-out, I now run a spin-on coolant filter on every truck I touch, so has anyone else here made the switch after a similar failure?

13 years running heavy equipment and I learned this the hard way on a Cat 3406. That little spin-on filter saved my ass after a buddy's rig grenaded its water pump impeller and sent all that debris straight through the block. I put one on every unit in my fleet now, even the older ones, cause the $60 filter is nothing compared to a $3k rebuild. Silicate drop out is real too, I've seen that green goo turn into straight sand in a coolant sample. Better to change a filter every oil change than pull a head in a parking lot somewhere in the middle of nowhere.
