Hmm, you're really questioning if they actually did blow it. But here's the thing, sometimes when you say you "thought" something in a situation like that, it actually means you're downplaying the whole ordeal. Like, no one just casually thinks they blew a head gasket without a pretty good reason, especially on a long stretch of I-40 near Flagstaff where it's either freezing or boiling. I'd bet my bottom dollar that car was smoking, overheating, or making some godawful noise, and they just don't want to admit it's a full-blown disaster yet. What makes you so sure they're just imagining things?
