Guy at the Austin figure drawing meetup said my 10 minute sketches looked better than my 2 hour ones and I'm still mad about it
I've been going to this Tuesday night figure drawing group in Austin for about 5 months now, and last week this older guy named Ray stopped at my easel during the break. He pointed at my quick 10 minute warmup sketch and then at the fully rendered 2 hour piece next to it, and said the fast one had "more life in it." I brushed it off at the time, but I pulled up both files on my tablet later that night and he was right, the long one was stiff and overworked. Now I'm second guessing my whole process and wondering if I've been wasting time on details that don't matter. Has anyone else had someone point out something like that and it just ruined how you see your own stuff?
The "more life in it" thing is real and it's not just drawing. I see it in cooking, in playing music, even in how people talk. The first take usually has something the fiftieth one doesn't, because you stop thinking and just do it. Five months in is about when most people start overworking stuff, so Ray probably just saved you a year of fighting yourself.
