I finally dropped $200 on a graphics tablet and the thing collected dust for 8 months

I bought a Wacom Intuos in January because everyone said it was the best for starting digital art. It sat in my drawer until last week. I just could not get the hang of drawing on a blank slab while looking at my screen. Then a friend in Portland told me to try it like a sketchpad, just short strokes, no pressure. After 3 nights of rough doodles I finally made a piece I actually like. So now I am wondering if I should have gone with a screen tablet instead. What did you all start with?
