Tried a new brush pack for a portrait and the skin texture came out way better than I expected

Oh man, I know that feeling. I grabbed a cheap brush set on a whim last month and it totally changed how I paint stubble and cheek texture. You're right though, it's like the new brushes just clicked with how I already try to work, making the messy parts way faster to get right. It's a good boost when something finally makes that tricky part feel easy.

Totally get what you mean about that click feeling. I bought a fancy brush once because a tutorial said to, and my work looked worse, like I was fighting the tool. So maybe @grantw32 has a point about the skill coming first. But sometimes a cheap brush just fits your hand right and gets out of the way, letting you do what you already know. It's like finding the right keyboard for typing, you know? Ever have a tool that just made things worse instead of better?

Honestly I have to disagree on the brush pack being the main thing. The real skill is in how you layer and build up the texture. I've seen people get amazing skin with the default round brush. It's more about knowing where to put the highlights and pores. A new brush can feel inspiring, but it's your eye that made it work. The tool just follows your lead.
