A guy at the Chicago meetup told me to kill my 3 longest email subject lines, and open rates jumped 11 points
I run email for a small outdoor gear shop and our open rate sat around 22% for most of last winter. At a marketing meetup in Chicago back in March, this guy who does lifecycle stuff for a big retailer looked at my last ten subject lines and told me the long ones were getting cut off on phones so nobody ever saw the hook. He told me to keep every subject under 40 characters and put the offer word first, which sounded way too simple to matter. I tried it on one campaign, a two-day sale, and opens went from 22% to 33%. Since then I've kept a little spreadsheet of subject length vs opens and the short ones win almost every time. Curious if anyone here has tested preview text the same way, because mine still feels like guesswork.
