Spent $400 on a fancy SEO tool, ended up back on the free version

Last month I signed up for MarketMuse Pro because I was drowning in keyword research for a client in Cleveland. The tool spit out these long content briefs that looked great on paper, but they took forever to read and the suggestions felt generic. I used it for about three weeks and my blog traffic didn't budge. Then I went back to Google's free keyword planner plus a $20 Chrome extension for SERP checking and got more usable ideas in one afternoon. I'm not saying paid tools are always junk, but I wish I'd trialed it slower instead of paying for the annual plan upfront. Has anyone else had a big budget tool just not click with how they actually work?

Same thing happened to me with Ahrefs last year, dropped $300 on the yearly plan and barely touched it after week two. The data was solid but I kept going back to a basic export from semrush’s free trial plus a notebook for my actual content ideas. It’s wild how a cheap stack of tools that match your workflow beats the fancy all-in-one every time.
