That vendor at SMX East 2023 who warned me about cheap email APIs

I was at SMX East in New York last September talking to this guy from a mid-size email tool company. He straight up told me their API had a 2% bounce rate on average because they didn't filter bad addresses. Said he lost a client who sent 50,000 emails to old lists and got blacklisted in a week. Anyone else get burned by a tool that didn't clean your list first?

Paid for "unlimited sends" once and got unlimited bounces instead.

Wait hold on, not to be that guy but... actually unlimited sends usually means they limit it by your server resources not the actual number of emails. Most of those cheap services will bounce your whole list if you try sending 50k emails on a $5 plan. I learned that one the hard way too, but usually it's more about their spam filters catching you than the "unlimited" being completely fake. Still feels like a scam though, I get it.

Honestly 2% bounce is fine if you're cleaning lists yourself before uploading.
