Pro tip: skip the co-working day pass and just rent a desk from a local shop instead
Everyone in the nomad groups swears by paying $25 to $35 a day for a co-working spot in places like Lisbon or Medellin, and I think that's a waste. Last month in Plovdiv my wifi died on a Thursday and I needed a quiet spot for a client call, so I walked into a tiny print shop and asked the owner if I could rent a corner desk for two weeks. He charged me 120 lev, about $66 total, and I had better internet than the fancy co-working place two blocks away. The catch is you have to be fine with no community events and a guy running a copier next to you, which honestly I am. Does anyone else go this route, or am I just being cheap?
Paying 35 bucks a day is not a waste if you think about what you actually get. A real co-working spot gives you a backup connection, a meeting room when a client wants to video chat, a printer that works, and other people to ask about tax stuff or a good accountant in a city you just landed in. Your print shop guy sounds great until he closes for a week, raises the price, or the one desk is taken when you show up, and then you're back on the street hunting for wifi. Being cheap on your work setup is fine until one dropped call costs you a client worth way more than the 200 bucks you saved. Two weeks in Plovdiv worked out, sure, but basing your whole setup on one lucky find is not really a plan.
