Serious question, does coworking actually help you focus?

I had a conversation with a guy at a hostel in Medellin last week. He said he pays $150 a month for a coworking desk but spends half the time chatting with people. Made me realize I do the same thing at coffee shops here in Chiang Mai, I get maybe 3 hours of real work done. Has anyone else noticed coworking spaces just turn into social clubs?

Used to think coworking spaces were the ultimate productivity hack, but I've changed my mind after watching friends there just socialize all day. The ratio of chat time to work time is basically the same as any coffee shop. Now I just work from home and save the money.

I get what you're saying about the chat vs work ratio, but for me the social buzz is actually what keeps me going. Without that background energy I'd just end up scrolling my phone at home.

Right there with you, it's honestly kind of disappointing to drop cash on a coworking spot and still get distracted by everyone around you. The social side can be fun but it totally kills momentum when you're actually trying to grind through a task. Sometimes a quiet home setup beats paying for a noisy vibe.
