Spent $300 on a local SIM card plan in Bali and it completely saved my work trip

I landed in Canggu last month and my usual international roaming was a joke, like 2G speeds. I almost missed a client call because my video kept freezing. So I went to a Telkomsel store and got their 30-day tourist plan for about 3 million IDR, which is around $300. It felt like a lot upfront, but it gave me unlimited data and a local number. The difference was insane. I could do video edits, upload large files from co-working spaces, and even hotspot my laptop reliably from a cafe. It basically turned my phone into a mobile office. I would've lost a major project without that stable connection. Has anyone found a cheaper but still reliable data provider for Indonesia, or is Telkomsel the only real option for heavy use?

Check the smaller XL Axiata kiosks by the beach, they often have better deals than the big Telkomsel stores. I got a 20-day plan for half that price last year and the speed was still solid for video calls. @janarivera is right, that panic is real, so having a backup SIM from a different provider is smart. Just make sure your phone is unlocked before you go.

Totally get that panic when your connection drops right before a big call! Spending that much upfront hurts, but you can't put a price on saving a project. I had a similar scare last year with spotty service during a remote work week, and it's the worst feeling. Glad the Telkomsel plan worked out so well for you.

Is losing a project really that likely from one bad call?
