Update: I thought travel insurance was a scam until the hospital in Medellin asked for $1,800 upfront
I skipped travel insurance for my first 8 months of nomading because I figured nothing would happen and it was just $60 a month down the drain. Then I got food poisoning bad in Medellin last month, spent a night at Clinica Las Americas, and they wouldn't even start the IV until I paid $1,800 on my card, which the $47 a month plan would have covered. Has anyone actually filed a claim for something like this, and did they pay you back without fighting it or did they find some fine print to hide behind?
$1,800 upfront for one night is brutal but that's just how private clinics in Colombia work, they don't bill you later like hospitals back home. The real question is whether a $47 a month plan actually pays out or makes you front the cash and then drags its feet on reimbursement for months. Most of those cheap nomad policies reimburse you after the fact, so you'd still be out the $1,800 at the counter either way. Did you look at what your plan's policy said about direct billing versus pay and claim?
