Vent: a hostel in Medellin made me drop my VPN and I got burned
Two weeks ago I was in a hostel in Medellin and the owner kept pushing his own router on everyone at check-in. I figured free wifi is free wifi, so I dropped my VPN and did a full day of client calls on it. Three days later my card got hit for $412 in charges I never made, and the bank traced it back to a login from that network. Now I buy a cheap local SIM in every city and tether off my phone instead. Has anyone else had a place push their network like that? I want to know if I was just unlucky or if this is a pattern.
