Warning: lost my entire month's work when a coffee shop's WiFi went down in Bali

I was camped at that trendy spot in Canggu, the one with the good smoothie bowls. Had a deadline in 2 hours for a client project, all my files were in the cloud. Power flickered, router died, and I couldn't tether because my local SIM ran out of data. Spent 45 minutes panicking and running between cafes trying to find a signal. Finally paid a scooter taxi guy 50k rupiah to take me to a coworking space 15 minutes away. Missed the deadline by an hour and lost the client. Has anyone else had a close call like this with unreliable internet?

My mate lost two weeks of drone footage when his villa wifi died in Ubud. Brutal.

Two weeks of footage gone is a nightmare, especially after all the time spent flying and editing. Cloud backups are expensive but that kind of loss makes them seem cheap in hindsight. Do you know if he had any local backups on hard drives or was it all stored on the drone's card?

The thing that finally worked for me was getting two big external hard drives and keeping one at my parents' house. I know that sounds extra but after losing a whole season of timelapse work from a road trip I was so mad at myself. I had the files on my laptop and the drone cards but my laptop died and I'd already reformatted the cards. Now I copy everything to the external drive, then I swap it with the one at my mom's place every month or so. It is a bit of a pain to remember but way cheaper than cloud storage and I sleep better knowing a coffee spill can't wipe out months of work.
