The tattoo artist who asked about my GED before sketching anything

Back in 2018 I walked into a shop in Austin to get my first piece done. The artist, a guy named Marco, saw my nervous face and asked if I ever finished high school. I told him no, and he just said, "Good, that means you actually learned something the hard way." He then spent 20 minutes explaining how he dropped out at 16 but built his whole career on steady effort instead of a piece of paper. That conversation stuck with me more than the tattoo itself, and I still think about it whenever I take a new pressure washing contract. Anyone else had a stranger's throwaway comment about education that just landed differently?

Marco's point lands, but he's kinda romanticizing dropping out. Real talk, plenty of folks with GEDs or diplomas grind just as hard, and the piece of paper isn't the whole story either. What actually matters is whether you show up and do the work, not which path you took to get there.
