I always thought painting my own kitchen cabinets was a crazy idea

Three years ago in my old apartment, I watched a friend spend a whole weekend on hers and it looked messy. But last month I saw a neighbor's finished project in Columbus and the detail was perfect, she just used a small foam roller. Has anyone painted cabinets without a sprayer and had them turn out smooth?

That's the key right there, the prep work and the roller. Markt23 is totally right, you can get a sprayed finish without the sprayer. The foam roller leaves almost no texture if you use thin coats and let them level out. Sanding between coats with a fine grit paper is what makes it feel smooth to the touch, not just look smooth from far away. It takes patience but it's completely doable.

How smooth did they look up close? I did mine with a good brush and mini roller, and you really can't tell it wasn't sprayed.

Actually had better luck with a microfiber roller than foam for getting it smooth. Foam can leave tiny bubbles sometimes.
