I was at the open house for a 1920s bungalow in Oak Park and saw they'd used cedar shingles to re-side the dormer.

Has anyone else used cedar for a small repair like that, and how did you handle sealing it against the existing painted wood siding?

Actually had to do something similar on my own place. Used an oil based primer that's made for cedar before painting, and it's held up fine for years now. The key is letting the wood dry out completely first.

Wasn't there a whole thing about cedar needing to breathe? I read that if you paint it or use a regular solid stain, it can trap moisture and cause rot from the inside. For a patch next to painted siding, maybe you'd have to use a special primer first, something that lets the wood dry out. Otherwise, won't the different materials just fight each other and cause problems in a few years? It seems like matching the look without messing up the function is the real trick.

Check the siding's backside for hidden rot first, like Parker183 should've.
