My neighbor in Austin swore by using a 1/4 inch notched trowel for my bathroom tile. He was totally wrong.

Oh man, that's the worst. You end up with half the thinset on the floor and tiles that slide around like they're on ice. My kitchen backsplash looked like a toddler did it because I listened to a similar "expert" who said just a little dab would do it. Spent more time fixing lippage than actually tiling.

Forget the sliding tiles, @harperg76, the real killer is how that skimpy thinset messes with your grout lines later. I mean, the tile might look okay until you grout and realize there's no real support behind it, so you get all these weak spots and cracks. Maybe it's just me but fixing that is way worse than cleaning up a little extra mortar. Honestly, that "dab will do" advice should come with a warning label.

Been there, done that. The cleanup alone makes it not worth it.
