My uncle warned me not to use standard drywall screws for my deck's ledger board, and he was right.

After a heavy rain last month, I found three of them had started to rust and bleed streaks down the siding, so now I have to replace them all with proper galvanized lag bolts.

Proper galvanized lag bolts" - did your uncle say if you need to coat them with anything too, or are they good to go right out of the box?

Just use them straight from the box, they're already protected.

Forget the coating, check the actual zinc thickness. A lot of stuff labeled "galvanized" these days is just a thin flash coat that won't last. You need to look for a heavy, rough finish, not something shiny and smooth. That thin stuff chips off easy and rust starts fast, especially if you're driving it into treated wood. The box might say protected, but the protection could be worthless.
