Shoutout to the 6 inch taping knife

I was patching some drywall in my hallway and used my old 4 inch knife for the first coat. It took forever and left a lot of ridges. Switched to a 6 inch Hyde for the second coat and it went on way smoother and faster, covering a bigger area with less work. Anyone have a go-to tool that made a simple job way easier?

I used to think a 4-inch knife was fine for everything... then I tried a 6-inch Marshalltown on a ceiling patch. The wider blade just floats over the surface and leaves way fewer lines to sand later. Totally changed how I approach any mudding work now.

Ever try a 12-inch knife for that? A 6-inch still leaves ridges on bigger patches for me. I keep a 4-inch for tight corners and a wider one for the main field.

Dianahayes is right about the wider blade just floating over the surface. I was the same way, stubbornly using a 4-inch for everything because it felt more controlled. Then I had to fix a big section of wall in my own place and borrowed a friend's 6-inch knife. The difference was stupidly obvious. It lays down a flatter coat in half the time, and you're not fighting to blend every little stroke. I still use the small one for corners, but the 6-inch is my main tool now.
