Okay, I used to totally roll my eyes at people who said "just turn off the water first" (like, duh, obviously) but honestly? I had a similar situation with a toilet handle and ended up with water everywhere. It's one of those things where you think you know what you're doing and then you realize you don't even know where the main shut-off is. That panic when you're standing in water and can't find the valve is real. I get it now, I really do.

Oh man, you just brought back a memory I'd buried. I was helping my sister fix a leaky faucet a few years back, and I was so sure I'd turned the right valve under the sink. Turns out I'd twisted the hot water valve instead of the cold, and when I started loosening the pipe, a geyser shot straight up into my face. I spent the next five minutes dripping wet, crawling around her basement with a flashlight, trying to find the main shut-off behind a stack of Christmas decorations. By the time I got it, the laundry room floor looked like a small swimming pool. It's humbling, that's for sure.

Did you end up labeling the valves after that mess or just leave it to memory? I swear every house I've lived in has some random shut-off hidden behind boxes or old paint cans, and half the time the labels are worn off or just plain wrong. My buddy had a similar flood in his garage and spent 20 minutes chasing a drip because the valve under the sink was labeled "guest bathroom" but it actually turned off the kitchen instead. Makes you wonder how many people have that one valve they just hope they never have to find in an emergency.
