Feedback from a retired electrician changed my entire approach to wiring

I was wiring up a new workshop in my garage about 6 months ago and an old neighbor who used to be an electrician stopped by. He saw me looping my wires the way I always did and told me I was leaving too much slack and not securing the bends right. He showed me a trick where you measure exactly how much wire you need and make 90 degree bends with a sharp curve using your thumb. I started doing it his way and now my junction boxes are way cleaner and I have less wire waste. Has anyone else gotten hands-on advice from an older tradesperson that made you change your habits?

That "measuring exactly" approach sounds like it could backfire if you ever need to re-terminate or change something down the road. Isn't a little extra slack just cheap insurance for future-you?
