Blown $80 on a digital caliper that was garbage, learn from my mistake

Ordered one of those cheap digital calipers off Amazon last month for some layout work on a kitchen remodel in Tacoma. Looked fine in the pics, had good reviews. Got it in, zeroed it out, measured a 2x4 and it read 1.47 inches. Thought my tape was off. Nope, the caliper was junk. Checked it against a machinist scale I borrowed from a buddy and it was off by almost a sixteenth. You can't trust tolerances like that for cabinet spacing. Sent it back and got a refund but wasted three days of fiddling with it before I caught the error. Anyone else get burned by cheap measuring tools? What brand do you actually trust for finish work?

Well now, that is frustrating, and I understand your pain. But here's something folks rarely think about: temperature. I have seen cheap calipers drift like crazy just from sitting in a warm truck or a cold garage for an hour. The metal expands and contracts, and the cheap electronics inside just don't compensate for it. You might have gotten a bad one, sure, but a lot of the time people blame the tool when the real problem is they are measuring a warm board with a cold tool, or vice versa. I always let my measuring tools sit in the room where I am working for at least twenty minutes before I trust them for anything important. That little trick has saved me more headaches than buying a fancy brand ever did.
