Had a chat with an old-school drafter who changed how I look at layers

Met this guy at a print shop last Tuesday. He saw me working on a file with like 50 layers and just laughed. Said I was making it harder on myself. He showed me his setup - 5 layers max for any project. Used colors and lineweights instead. Been trying it this week and my files are way cleaner. Anyone else run into old timers with weird tricks that actually work?

Started using the same idea with my kitchen cabinets last month, less stuff means way less mess. People overcomplicate everything thinking more layers or tools equals better results but it's usually the opposite.

Oh man you're so right about people overcomplicating stuff. So when you stripped down your cabinets did you go full minimal like only keeping the essentials or did you still have some "just in case" items hanging around? I'm trying to figure out where the line is between practical and just being a hoarder with extra steps.

@terryw67 but more layers give you more control though. Having separate layers for fill, hatch, text, and dimensions means you can turn stuff off without losing detail. Five layers works for simple projects but try doing a building section with just five layers and you'll see the problem fast.
