My neighbor thought my mechanical drawing was a modern painting... it changed how I present my work.

Honestly, letting a neighbor's mix-up change your whole approach seems a bit drastic. Mechanical drawings have a clear purpose, and confusing them with modern art just shows a lack of understanding. Basing your presentation on what people get wrong might lead you down a weird path. Stick to what works for the actual audience, not someone who can't tell a blueprint from a painting. Your work should stand on its own merits, not get twisted by random opinions.

Once had a client mistake my wiring diagrams for abstract sketches... I learned to include a quick legend or title block upfront now. It saves time and stops those confused comments cold. Maybe add a brief intro slide explaining the purpose before diving in?

Man, that neighbor comment would've thrown me off too. It's tough when someone completely misses the point of your work, even if they're not your target audience. I get wanting to add a quick explanation now, just to avoid that weird feeling. Your drawings deserve to be seen for what they are.
