Overheard a senior drafter say manual drafting teaches better spatial awareness than CAD ever will

He claimed old-school drafters catch layout errors faster than guys who only use software, but I see my CAD tools catching mistakes in 3D before they hit the shop floor, so which method actually builds sharper instincts for real-world drafting work?

Both methods have their place honestly. In my experience, starting with manual drafting gave me a better feel for how things fit together, but the 3D checks save me time catching the small stuff.

That's a solid take, man. I've been in similar spots where the manual drawing just clicks something in your brain that the computer can't. Like when I was laying out a tricky corner cabinet, sketching it by hand helped me see the load distribution way better than staring at a 3D render. But yeah, the digital models are lifesavers for catching those 1/8 inch gaps you'd miss on paper. Your mileage may vary, but it sounds like you've got a good balance going.

Manual drafting builds spacial intuition that CAD shortcuts actually bypass.
