Switched from manual drafting to full digital CAD 3 years ago and I still miss the feel of a real pencil
I worked at a small firm in Austin where the old lead drafter swore by physical blueprints. He retired and they forced us all onto Autodesk. Took me about 6 months to stop hating it. Now I'm faster but my sketches look like garbage compared to what I used to put down on vellum. Anyone else feel like something got lost with the switch?

You still miss the feel of a real pencil" - that part hit me hard. I was a watercolor artist before going into drafting, and switching to digital felt like losing a part of my hand. The tactile feedback, the way graphite smells on paper, the resistance of a good mechanical pencil - there's nothing like it in CAD. I still keep a sketchbook at my desk for rough ideas, even though it's "inefficient" according to my manager. Are you doing any hand drawing on the side to keep that muscle memory alive, or did you just bury it like I almost did?

Has that manager ever actually tried to sketch something by hand, @dianaanderson? Cause I bet if they did, they'd see how fast that "inefficient" method actually is for getting ideas out of your head and onto something real.

I read that hand sketching actually activates different parts of the brain, which is wild.
