Warning: My whole view on layer management changed after a 2am crash in a Portland firm.

The senior drafter next to me just said 'your system is a mess' and showed me his method. What's your one non-negotiable CAD rule?

What's the one thing you never skip? I read this article about a firm that lost weeks of work because they used colors instead of proper layer names. My rule is every single layer gets a real name, no exceptions. Colors and line weights are just for looks, they can change. If the name doesn't tell you exactly what it is, it's a bad layer. How do you handle naming things?

Portland is a good example because that late night crash happens everywhere. The_william is right about names being the real structure. My rule builds on that: every layer name must work for a search. If you can't find all the concrete walls by searching "wall concrete" or "c conc" in your standard, the system is broken. Colors and line types are just tags that hang on a solid naming frame. What search term do you make sure always works in your projects?

Forget names, just color code everything and wing it.
