My buddy's near-miss with a clogged pump changed my view on daily checks.
Now I never skip inspecting the intake screen.

Got to add one thing to your routine. Cleaning the screen is great, but you also need to check it for small tears. A tiny hole can let in just as much junk as a clog. I learned that the hard way last season. Now I run a flashlight behind it during my check to spot any damage.

Isn't the flashlight trick a bit much, miles_fisher?

Used to think checking for tears was overkill until I found a pinprick hole that wrecked my whole filter. Now I do the flashlight thing every single time. Victor209 might call it extra, but it takes two seconds and saves a huge headache later. That tiny bit of light shows you everything you can't see just wiping it down. Honestly changed my whole routine.
