Noticed a huge shift in my cutterhead wear patterns after switching to a different sand/silt ratio zone

Spent 6 months in the same borrow pit and always replaced teeth every 3 weeks, then got moved to a new pit with way more silt and the teeth lasted 8 weeks before needing a swap. Anyone else see that kind of difference based on material composition?

Does the same thing happen with dirt roads you drive on every day? I live down a long gravel road and noticed after a big rain washed a bunch of clay into it, the road got super slick and rutted up way faster than when it was mostly sand. The clay packed down tight and held water, making it a whole different surface to deal with. That switch in material really changes how things wear out or behave, just like your cutterhead teeth.

So are you saying the clay basically changed the whole friction profile of that road... because that sounds a lot like what happens with cutterhead teeth when you hit a clay seam @jana_hart18. Did it take you a while to figure out the right tire setup or speed to handle that new surface?
