The cut on my 10 inch dredge cutterhead after 200 hours of sand

I swapped out my old cutterhead for a new one on my 10 inch rig back in March. After about 200 hours of running through mostly sand and some clay layers, I pulled it for maintenance last weekend. The wear pattern was totally different than what I expected - the teeth on the outer ring were ground down way more than the inner ones. I figure it's from the higher tip speed on the outside edges. Anybody else notice this kind of uneven wear on their cutterheads?

Outer ring teeth ground down way more than the inner ones" - well yeah, that's physics doing its thing! Your cutterhead isn't just spinning in place, it's basically a blender on steroids where the outside blades are doing the most work. The tip speed thing you mentioned is real, it's like how the end of a broom wears out faster than the middle. Honestly, I'd be more worried if they wore evenly because that would mean something's wrong with your dredging setup. Maybe throw some hardened teeth on the outer ring next time if you're not already doing that. But hey, at least you got 200 hours out of it before noticing, that's way better than finding out when a tooth flies off into the slurry.

Think of it like any cutting tool that spins fast. A regular lawn mower blade wears down faster on the tips too for the same reason, more surface area hitting the dirt. I noticed the same thing on my old gravel pit conveyor belt - the edges of the rubber always frayed before the middle wore out. It's just basic physics, the further you get from the center the more force you're putting on that spot. 200 hours on a dredge in sand is honestly not bad at all for that kind of uneven wear. You're probably good to just swap out the outer teeth more often and run the inner ones longer.

Man that's rough to see after only 200 hours of work. I've had similar issues with my own gear where the outer parts just take a beating way faster than the rest. Hoping you can get some more life out of those inner teeth at least, that's something.
