Tried that 'listen for the pump' trick on the old Erie Sand Sucker and it actually works
Was sure it was just an old wives' tale until we avoided a 12-hour shutdown by catching a bearing whine two days early. Anyone have a good method for checking impeller wear without pulling the whole housing?

We used a borescope camera on a similar pump last year. Got a decent look at the leading edges through the discharge flange. Saved us a full teardown.

Heard about a guy who swore by checking the power draw on the variable frequency drive. His theory was that a worn impeller would pull less amps under the same load. Watched him do it on a big vertical turbine pump, and the numbers actually backed him up. They pulled the unit the next week and the vanes were chewed down to nubs. Not a perfect test, but it gave them enough warning to order the new part ahead of time.
