Oh man I feel this on so many levels. It's kind of like how people think upgrading your gear automatically makes you better at something but really you just end up fighting a tool that's trying to be too clever. It's the same thing with those expensive self-sharpening knives I bought for the kitchen they cut weird and I always go back to my old one. Sometimes the simplest stuff just lets you focus on the actual work instead of fighting the tool.

Honestly man I feel your pain. I picked up one of those fancy curved ones last year thinking it would make my life easier and it absolutely wrecked my first few coats too. I mean it just left these weird ripples that I couldn't figure out how to fix with the regular flat knife. Ended up tossing it in the back of my truck and haven't touched it since. Sometimes the basic tools just work better you know?

Yeah but have you ever tried using a putty knife that's been sitting in the rain for three days...
