Called me crazy but I quit using banjos on ceilings

For years everyone swore by banjo taper tools for hanging ceiling rock but I gave em the boot about 2 years back. Started hand taping my ceilings with a 6 inch knife and a box of 60 minute mud and honestly it cuts my time by about 15 minutes a sheet. Less mess on the floor too. Anyone else ditch the tool and go manual?

30 minutes a sheet was my breaking point with the banjo, man. I switched to hand taping 18 months ago after a bad batch of mud clogged my tool mid-ceiling and I wanted to throw the whole thing out the window. The key for me was getting the mud a little stiffer than what you'd run through the banjo, almost like a thick mayo consistency. I use a 6 inch knife too but I'll go up to an 8 inch for the butt joints, less passes and way smoother finish. Plus no more cleaning out that damn nozzle every time you stop for a coffee.

Haha I feel that, banjo almost went through the drywall instead of on it at my place too.

Hated cleaning that banjo nozzle myself, worst part of the whole job.
