Had a weird ceiling job in an old Denver house last Tuesday

The plaster was coming down in chunks, and the homeowner wanted drywall over the old lath. I ended up using 1/4 inch board and a ton of extra screws to get it to sit right without cracking. What's your go-to method for covering up a failed plaster ceiling?

My uncle swears by furring strips first to make a level surface for the new board.

Yeah, that's the only way to get it right sometimes. Old tricks are often the best ones.

Come on, old tricks can be a total waste of time. That extra step @murphy.abby mentioned just adds cost and labor for no real gain. Why build out a whole new surface when you can just screw the new board right over the old, uneven one? A few shims in the low spots and you're done. Modern materials are made to handle some imperfection.
