I finally told a customer their sand-free finish was overkill for a garage
Had a convo last week with a guy who's been hanging board since the 80s, he said he stopped doing smooth walls in garages after too many callbacks from cracked joints. He pointed out that garages shift and settle way more than living spaces, so all that extra sanding just makes cracks more visible later. Anyone else think we oversell finish levels for garages and basements?

Oh man, I laughed out loud at this. It's like buffing a bumper on a beater car, lol. I had a buddy who spent a whole weekend skim coating his garage walls to perfection, and then his kid put a basketball through the drywall two weeks later. All that elbow grease just for a spot that's gonna get hit with lawnmower gas fumes and a leaky roof anyway.

Yeah I just threw some drylok paint on my garage walls and called it a day. Way faster and it hides all the ugly spots under a thick coat.

Feel you on that. Sometimes good enough is actually perfect.
