Just realized my old foreman was right about using a 12-inch knife for the first coat on ceilings.

He always said, 'A bigger knife means fewer ridges to sand later,' and after fighting with a 10-inch on a vaulted ceiling job in Tacoma last week, I finally switched and saved myself at least two hours of sanding, so what's your go-to knife size for that first pass?

That Tacoma job sounds brutal. My old boss used to say the same thing about knives, right before he'd tell us to stop cutting corners on the tape.

Oh man, @dianahayes, that's the kind of boss wisdom that sticks with you! My last boss would always say "a sharp knife is a safe knife" while using a box cutter so dull it just mashed through the tape. I think he was trying to teach us patience, honestly.

Ugh, I feel that pain so much lol. My old boss was like @adamk95's, full of sayings that never matched his tools. Switching to a bigger knife for the first coat is a total game changer for real.
