Old timer showed me a trick with a 6-inch knife on my first big job in Denver

I was struggling to get a smooth taper on a long butt joint near the ceiling, and this guy who's been hanging board since the 80s walked over without saying a word. He just took my knife, tilted it at a sharper angle, and dragged it through the mud in one clean pass - no extra sanding needed. Have you ever had a random stranger step in and fix your work on the spot?

Is it really that serious over a little mud on a wall?

The clean pass trick is legit but it still needs SOME sanding. You're right about that. That taper he laid down was close to perfect but there's always a little ridge or a high spot that needs a once over. I've seen guys get real close but nobody lays mud that flat without at least a quick knock down with a pole sander. Good on you for calling that out.
