Hot take: That conversation with my neighbor about fabric softener actually made me ditch the stuff
I was loading my washer last Saturday and my neighbor Paul walks over and says "you know that stuff ruins your towels, right?" I laughed it off at first but he kept going. He said it coats the fibers so they can't absorb water anymore. I thought about it and my bath towels have been feeling less fluffy lately. So I stopped using softener for 2 weeks now. My clothes feel different but not in a bad way. Anyone else ever quit using it and notice a difference?

Jumped in to agree with you actually! My wife and I stopped using fabric softener a couple years ago when we got new towels and read the care tags. They literally say "do not use fabric softener" on them! I will say be careful with your detergent too, some of those have softener built in. We just use a basic free and clear one now. Our towels are way more absorbent now, like I can actually dry off in one pass instead of rubbing forever.

Oh gosh, that reminds me of when my roommate in college used fabric softener on our microfiber couch cover. We sat down and basically slid right off onto the floor! Took three washes to get that stuff out.
