Warning: check for bees before taking home a "free" couch from the curb

I saw this really nice looking love seat out on the curb down the street from my place in Denver last Tuesday. Looked clean, no stains, good condition. I was so excited I didn't think to look underneath or inside the cushions before loading it into my pickup. Got it home and as I'm carrying it down the basement steps, I hear this loud buzzing sound. Yeah, a whole nest of bees had set up shop inside the bottom cushion. Had to call an exterminator and drop $175 to get them removed. Now I always check anything fabric for bugs before I grab it. Anyone else ever bring home unwanted critters with your curb scores?

$175 for an exterminator sounds like a lot but you probably saved more in the long run. A couch from the curb is free for a reason and bugs or nesting critters come with the territory. You took a gamble on free furniture and this time you lost, but that's the price of doing business with curb scores.

Laughing at myself here because I'm the queen of curb scores gone wrong. Last year I nabbed a free dresser from the alley and brought home bedbugs that took two months to get rid of. Spent way more than $175 on that little adventure, trust me. So yeah, you live and learn and maybe invest in a good shop vac and some bleach before dragging furniture inside. At least the couch didn't come with a family of raccoons living in it. Right?
