Chat with a retired mail carrier about my robin routine

Old guy named Frank told me I was scaring the birds off by putting out fresh seed right at dawn. He said wait 20 minutes after sunrise. Tried it yesterday. Three robins stayed for a full 10 minutes instead of bolting. Anyone else get tips from random neighbors that actually work better than online guides?

Did your neighbor Frank used to drive the rural routes? My buddy Mike got told by an old retiree to stop filling his feeders all the way to the top. Guy said birds get lazy and stop foraging if you just dump a pile out. Mike only fills his tube feeder halfway now and swears the finches and chickadees work the bark for bugs more. He's been birding for like 15 years and said that was the first tip that really changed his yard.

Did you ever try mixing in a cheap cracked corn with your seed to make the good stuff last longer?

Oh totally, Frank sounds like he knows his stuff, had a retired park ranger tell me to scatter seed on the ground and it doubled my visitors.
