Hit 50 different bird species from my backyard this morning

I've been sitting out on my porch every dawn for the last two years with a coffee and my phone camera. This morning I spotted a hooded warbler and that brought my list to exactly 50 species seen from that one spot. Has anyone else kept a running tally from their yard and hit a number that surprised them?

Totally hear you, "patience and luck" hits home for me. I've had days where I sit for hours and see nothing, then a random flicker shows up when I'm not even looking.

Hit 50 different bird species from my backyard" is a cool achievement, for sure, but I see it a little differently. It feels more like a celebration of your own patience and luck with whatever birds wander through, not a skill or a real nature connection. I'd rather just enjoy the occasional robin without turning my porch into a checklist.

I actually see it the opposite way, keeping a list makes me pay way more attention to little details like calls and behaviors I'd totally miss otherwise. It's not about luck, it's about training your eyes and ears to actually notice what's out there.
