Just realized chickadees and titmice sound totally different in fall vs spring
I was out at 6am yesterday near the creek and heard what I thought was a new bird, but it was just a Carolina chickadee doing its autumn call. My neighbor Linda pointed out they change their songs between seasons for territory stuff, and now I feel like I missed a whole layer of bird behavior for the last 10 years. Has anyone else noticed voice changes in your regular early morning visitors?

You ever had one of those days where you realize something that was right in front of you the whole time? It's like when I finally noticed that the robins in my yard got way quieter in late summer, and I spent like two weeks just sitting with my coffee watching them every morning. I think the fun part is once you start listening for the shifts, it opens up a whole new world of little details you missed before. For me, it was paying attention to how the cardinals change their calls when they're feeding young vs just hanging out. Now I can't unhear it, and my wife jokes that I'm a bird snob. Just keep listening, you'll catch on faster than you think.

I spent three mornings last week convinced I had a new warbler moving through, just to realize it was a cardinal doing its quiet late summer thing. It's wild how much their voices change, your neighbor Linda sounds like a goldmine of bird info.

Spent a full 20 minutes yesterday trying to identify a mystery bird call only to find out it was my own car door creaking from the cold. Linda is a good source, she knows her stuff though. Now I'm obsessed with noticing the seasonal changes too.
