My backyard finch feeder went from empty to chaos in 3 days
Had zero birds for two weeks straight, then suddenly 12 goldfinches showed up at once yesterday morning. Turns out the thistle seed I bought at the hardware store was just stale - swapped it for fresh from the feed mill and now they won't leave. Anyone else have finches that are picky about seed age?

Funny how that works with finches, they can totally tell when seeds have sat around too long. It reminds me of how picky people get with coffee beans or even fresh bread - the older stuff just doesn't hit the same. Once you get that fresh batch in the feeder, they come running like they knew you finally got it right. Are your goldfinches going through the new seed faster than you expected?

My friend bought a bag that smelled dusty and the finches just ignored it for two weeks.

OH MAN that reminds me of my neighbor's parrot, this cranky old African Grey named Mango. He REFUSED to touch a bowl of food if it was more than like three hours old, but would scream his head off if you tried to swap it out too fast. One time my friend left a half-eaten apple slice on his cage and he just stared at it for an entire afternoon like it personally offended him. Birds are WEIRD about freshness, they've got some kind of built-in expiry sensor or something.
