PSA: Picked a cheap bird feeder from Walmart over a proper one from the hardware store. Regretted it in 3 days.
The plastic tray cracked on day two when some rain got in and froze. By day three a squirrel had chewed through the cheap metal mesh. Woke up to seed all over my deck and no birds for a week until I replaced it with a steel one from Tractor Supply. Has anyone else had luck with DIY squirrel-proofing or should I just pony up for the expensive stuff?

Walmart stuff is fine if you don't leave it out in bad weather.

oh totally, and honestly even then it's not like they're gonna crumble into dust. i left a walmart folding chair out on my porch for like three months straight through rain and snow and it's still fine, just a little rusty on the hinges. people act like you need to spend a hundred bucks on a camping chair or something but half the time the expensive ones fall apart just as fast. my buddy bought a name brand cooler and the hinge broke the first time he sat on it, meanwhile my walmart special has been sitting on my deck for two years handling everything. it's like, who cares if the plastic is a little thinner when it's half the price and still gets the job done.
